Your only option is to tighten your sail and push on or simply wait for the wind direction to change.įor many Windbound players, the first major difficulty spike will be your encounter with the Gorehorn. However, there will be times when you need to travel against the wind which can be hugely frustrating. By loosening your sail you can catch the wind and let it carry you. Wind direction is clearly indicated and can also be seen by popping open the world map. A single canoe will rock too much and travels slowly compared to a bigger boat with two canoes and a raft wedged between them. Windbound tries to emulate the physics of real sailing and as such we’d only recommend attaching a sail once you have a bigger boat. Unlike paddling, you’re not fully in control of where your vessel goes and at what speed. You will need to learn how to sail in Windbound. Make sure you craft boat upgrades regularly, keeping a stockpile of wood, bamboo, and sticks. At first your only way of travelling across water is by paddling with Kara’s magical oar though you’ll soon unlock a sail (we’ll talk about sailing next). It may not look like much now, but this will evolve into your very own floating fortress. One of the very first things you’ll do in Windbound is build a primitive canoe. You will need 5 Palm Fronds and 2 Grass Rope (crafted from 4 Thick Grass) to make the bag, adding 7 additional slots to your inventory! Honestly, there’s nothing more frustrating in survival games than having to leave items on the ground because you don’t have room to carry them. This happens naturally over time anyway, so make sure you have food rations on hand to keep this bar topped up.Ĭraft the Palm Bag as soon as you can. You can stop and take a breather to regain stamina though pushing yourself will cause the bar to shrink. The yellow bar will deplete as you exert yourself running, swimming, and performing other physical actions. Learning how to manage your stamina is an essential survival skill in Windbound.

(Some have a DTS:X soundtrack, but Atmos is more common.) Of course, to get the most out of watching these movies, you need a home-speaker system equipped to unleash the immersive fun of object-based surround sound. Many Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray titles are now available with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. It literally adds a new dimension of excitement and impact to watching movies! Individual sound sources, such as spaceships, rain, voices and ambient effects, can be placed anywhere in the soundfield, fooling our brains into thinking we're in the middle of the action rather than simply watching it on the screen in front of us. Immersive, “object-based surround sound”-specifically, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X-places speakers around the audience horizontally as well as overhead, creating a more convincing three-dimensional soundfield. Finally, the head-spinning, heart-pounding emergence of 5.1 surround sound debuted in the 1970s, followed by 7.1, leading us to the ultimate experience. Mono became stereo, then three channels, all in front of the audience. Movie soundtracks have evolved dramatically in nearly a century since music and sound effects first appeared in motion pictures, followed by synchronized dialogue and the emergence of “talkies” in the late 1920s. You’ve learned the first five! What did you discover about your pearls? Use 5x or 10x magnifying glass to observe the pearl surface, if they are real pearls (including natural pearl and cultured pearls), the surface seems to be grown as grain, like the wind over the dunes but, if you see the rugged eggshell surface, then they are imitation pearls. And if the fake is plastic, sometimes your teeth will make depressions in the pearl. But a fake pearl will be slippery with no sound. If you bite a real pearl and scrape it slightly with your teeth, you can feel and hear the sandy, grainy surface of the pearl. When you shake and knock an entire string of pearls, the real pearls will have a softer more comfortable sound and the fakes will sound thin or tinny. After you scratch it, retouch it smoothly and the scratch should disappear and the luster comes back That’s why another easy way to tell if your pearl is real is to use your nail to scratch the pearl surface, and if you see pearl powders that should be real. Just blow away the powder and your pearls will still have their usual luster. NOTE: don’t be afraid to rub the pearls together, it will not harm your real pearls. An easy way to tell if your pearl is real is trying to rub it against your tooth, and if it’s real pearl it felt gritty. But if the pearls are fake, they will have a slip or smooth surface. If the imitation pearls are pure glass beads, the weight is usually heavier than real pearls, but if imitation beads are waxed glass, it will only have about half of the weight of real pearls. If you hold one pearl in each hand (could be from the same necklace) and rub them against each other, there is a sense of an uneven feeling (jerky rough feel) If the pearls are real, then a pearl powder will be produced when you rub them together. Real pearls give a sense of cool when they are in your hand, while imitation pearls have a sticky feeling when rolling and sliding. The perfect pearl is so rare, that’s why perfect pearls with big size and good luster usually sell for hundreds of thousand dollars.Įven when the weather is hot, true pearls have a sense of cool. Naturally grown pearls are very difficult to have a necklace all the same shapes, especially those that are rounded or pearls that is particularly uniform in size. True pearls do not have a particularly neat shape. Because they have been made by nature, each pearl has its individual “personality.” Fake pearls usually have the same size and shape. When you look at each pearl on a necklace, the color, shape, size, and luster the pearls are not all exactly the same. Learn the first five easy Pearl Identification rules! In the marketplace, there’s a wide range of pearl jewelry and it’s often difficult for consumers to distinguish the real pearls from the fake ones. Full Description View Full Description Atomic toneīlow the competition out of the water. And that's why it's not only a threat to other smartwatches, but to mechanical watchmaking. One of its biggest secrets, though, is this: it shows every indication of having been made by people who love and understand watches, and who know that for any kind of wearable to succeed, it has to be love at first sight. I think the Apple Watch is winning the smartwatch wars right now for several reasons: better UI is one (I struggle to find Android Wear compelling, in any form, at least so far) and its ability to keep your phone in your pocket, and your head up, is another. Take Force Touch, for instance the UI really needs some sort of cue that clues you into when it can be used to access a function or change a setting or, absent that, you have to accept that there's a learning curve in figuring out when you're supposed to use it. And for all its polish, especially with the latest software update, it’s still clear there are problems left to be solved – one of the biggest gaps to fill, I think, is that with three possible control inputs, it’s not always clear which should be used when. Granted, Apple has a design development war chest that’s probably bigger than the entire annual earnings of every watch brand put together, and granted, they have people like Jony Ive and Marc Newson behind them. I can think of frighteningly few watches at any price, mechanical or quartz, that are as well designed. It's just one part of the most expensive Apple Watch outside of the gold Edition, and the whole watch costs $1,099. If that bracelet had been designed in Switzerland it would probably have added four figures to the cost of the watch it came on, and I'm not sure that there is a watch brand in Switzerland with the imagination to design something like this right now. In dismissing the Apple Watch – or in rushing to market with poorly thought out, or obviously overpriced and cynically designed smartwatches – I think the Swiss watch industry is missing something, which is that Cupertino may understand luxury better than Europe right now. It's a very nifty feature in itself, but it also shows the kind of attention to detail that luxury should be about. It would certainly feel more native to a mobile touch experience than the tabbed system in iOS Safari, and the tile system for organizing apps in general, which by comparison with the Apple Watch now feels restrictive. The iPhone’s navigation system feels, by comparison, still rooted in a desktop paradigm, including the browser experience, and I wonder whether or not the app navigation system in the Apple Watch wouldn’t make a great basis for a mobile browser. You’d have thought Apple would go with the tile-based design the iPhone uses, but in fact, the Watch app navigation system makes a lot more sense it’s a better use of screen real estate and I found it a lot more engaging than the design for the iPhone. The icons roll in any direction you swipe, as if they’re on the surface of an invisible sphere as the icons roll to the center position, they’re magnified. Each app has a circular icon, and the overview of all the apps is in the form of a circular cluster you navigate with finger swipes. How long the whole process takes depends on whether or not you choose to upload any Watch compatible apps from your phone onto your Watch, but all in all, it took less than ten minutes from the moment I turned on the Watch to actually wearing it.Īpps are represented in an interesting way. You’ll then be asked if you want to do things like set up a credit card for Apple Pay, set up the Activity app, and match settings on your iPhone (the Apple Watch mirrors privacy settings on your iPhone, which is more than just a nice touch it helps keep the whole experience from becoming confusing and overwhelming you can also manage privacy in each app individually). (In fact, it’s so much fun to watch I wish Apple offered it as an optional watch face.) Center the image in a frame shown in the Watch app and you’re paired automatically. The watch displays a swirling globular particle cloud – it’s not anything in particular but it looks like it could be an abstract representation of a lot of things: flocking starlings schooling plankton a neural network a star cluster sped up so that every second represents a billion years a concept-art study for the sentient planet Solaris in the Stanislaw Lem novel of the same name. This is a lot of fun (maybe the first time in the history of Bluetooth someone’s managed to make device pairing fun). This performance of 'Yeh-Yeh' inspried the 1964 hit single by British vocalist Georgie Fame.Ĭ. Scott Yanow, writing on AllMusic said of the album: "Highlights include ' One O'Clock Jump,' ' Watermelon Man,' 'Cloudburst' and a funny rendition of Hendricks' 'Gimme That Wine.' All of the records by this group (and its predecessor Lambert, Hendricks and Ross) are well worth acquiring even if Yolande Bavan was not a soloist on the level of an Annie Ross." ( Those of you who know the song from my Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes CD will note some different lyrics – the ones Hendricks sings are an earlier draft.) Thanks to David Lindsay-Abaire and David Petrarca for letting me do it, and for inspiring me with such a great play.Reception Professional ratings Review scoresīillboard reviewed At Newport '63 upon its release in their 16 November 1963 issue, calling the album "A wild performance indeed." In this recording, you’ll hear about three minutes of the incidental music, and then “Grow Old With Me,” the song I wrote for the curtain calls. And it was everything I could have wanted. I’ve had a lot of cool things happen in my career, but this is the only time I can think of that one of my childhood idols sang one of my songs. I brought a copy of one of Jon’s rarest albums to the session – a 1973 Arista LP called Tell Me The Truth, produced by Ben Sidran – and I asked Jon if he would sign it. Jon Hendricks did a scat solo over changes I wrote. “Yeah, okay, that’s cool!” he said, and I sort of stared at the phone for a minute, because it meant that Jon Hendricks, the person who taught me how to love jazz, was going to sing my music. I believe I spoke as quickly as I have ever spoken in my life, and I told him I wanted him to come do a session for me in New York City. So I called that number, and Jon Hendricks answered the phone in a gravelly, just-woken-up voice. Hendricks directly in Ohio – he was teaching in Toledo. The number in the directory connected me to Jon’s former manager, who told me to call Mr. I had budgeted a thousand dollars to pay him for the session – it was basically my entire fee for the project and it was an insultingly low number to offer “the James Joyce of jive,” but it was really all I could afford to do. I looked in the Local 802 directory for Jon Hendricks because I had written the incidental music for a play and his was the voice I had heard in my head while I was writing it. I think I did actually see Jon perform some years later, but strangely I can’t remember that but I do remember the Sweet Basil gig when he didn’t show up. My Dad and I got tickets, but alas, Hendricks was sick that night and Annie Ross jumped in at the last minute to take over, which was okay I guess, but I had actually already SEEN Annie Ross live and the whole point was that I hadn’t seen Hendricks and ugh whatever. It was 1991 maybe, I had moved to New York City, and Jon Hendricks was playing Sweet Basil in the Village. In college I finally found a copy of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross! The Hottest New Group in Jazz! on LP, and I heard more joy in every minute of that album than in every other record I owned. Three of my friends and I learned the Manhattan Transfer arrangement of “Birdland.” If Hendricks hadn’t set words to so many jazz classics, I wouldn’t have known them, and they wouldn’t have led me to the originals, and the originals wouldn’t have led me even deeper to so much of the music that fulfills me. I think the next thing was that my Dad had Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan Recorded Live at Basin Street East in his record collection and I found it one day in high school and started playing it constantly, obsessed with how the lyrics rode on these insanely twisty bebop solos, and loving the vocal harmonies. I think it starts with Barry Manilow, who included “Cloudburst” and “Avenue C”, both with Jon Hendricks’s lyrics, in the “Jump Shout Boogie Medley” on his 1977 “Live” album, which I listened to religiously as a child.
